Football thread (League/Union/AFL/Soccer)

Has anyone mentioned Wayne Bennett yet?  My husband is from Qld, and a Broncos supporter.  I wasn’t really surprised when St George (coached by Wayne Bennett) beat the Broncos first up this season.  And I’m not surprised they’re still winning.  There’s nothing like a good coach (from whatever state) going to a new team to lift their performance.

I only scored 5 in AFL after tipping my Hawks, and hot picks Brisbane and West Coast. And I did select St Kilda to burst Geelong’s bubble ;)

In NRL, I’m sitting on 6 out of 7 - and going for the Sea Eagles tonight. Only loss has been Newcastle Knights - and they only missed by 4 points. So glad to see the Panthers and Tigers get up this weekend.

Kevin, even though we (obviously) got different wrong picks, I personally think anyone who got more than half of them right this week is a genius! My daughter and son in law both got 7/8 which is incredible - I thought every game (except one!) was tough to pick. (And you probably thought the same game was the only easy one but the other way). Picking the result between two weak teams is as hard as picking between two good teams (St Kilda Geelong - I got that one right too), maybe even harder because the good teams tend to be consistent, the bad teams fluctuate wildly (eg Melbourne v WCE, Sydney v Norths, Port v Brisbane, Carlton v Freo.)
Now for Collingwood! Fortunately it’s on Friday (I am out again on Saturday) so I can sit there and yell at the TV. You have Norths who are hard to pick - at least you’re in Tasmania which is your home from home.

Jean, I gather you don’t like Collingwood!

Wow guess what I wished for worked - Manly getting up!  Dragons clear top :=).

Arthur NO-ONE (except their own crazy supporters) can even tolerate Collingwood. But I especially dislike them when they are playing my wonderful Bulldogs.

Hi Jean - unless you’ve got Foxtel etc you’ll have a late night on Friday - as 7 have a delayed broadcast only starting at 11.30pm !  And I too expect the Bulldogs to win easily - but having said that, maybe Collingwood will cause an upset and mess up my tips once again ;)

This week’s draw seems fairly straight forward - if you use recent results to make your picks. And those Norths versus Hawthorn matches can always be a toss up. I still remember being at the 1975 Grand Final when the Kangaroos meticulously decimated the Hawks throughout all four quarters. But I was still happy to be there on the day - my one and only AFL Grand Final.

Kevin, I shall sit there at 7.30 in front of channel 518, cheering, groaning and gesticulating wildly. (And dashing to the kitchen and bathroom between quarters.)  I get annoyed at delayed telecasts and replays unless it is absolutely essential-I need to know NOW!
I also thought that most of this week’s games looked obvious, but you always need to factor in the one “upset” and try to work out which one it will be.

Cheering, groaning and gesticulating wildly [against Collingwood]

Ok, got it in one!

Dragons play on Sunday in the NRL so gotta wait a few more days to do the same kind of thing!

Yep - one point is enough to do it isn’t it Jean ? Looking at the coming final 7 rounds, both Collingwood have some very tough matches coming up - and then ( for some obscure reason ) they have to face up to each other again in round 22 on August 30. That will be a great contest.

Wow the Collingwood win was certainly unexpected.

On a very tangential note, I watched my friends play soccer in the local league (for the Hurstville Glory Fs).  Just came home and they had a massive win to the tune of [scroll down]

My ability to pick winners continues it’s downward spiral. I ignored a strange feeling that the Swans were about to take a nose dive - and get “bombed” out by Essendon. At least Carlton won.

I have ALWAYS hated Collingwood. With good reason! Never mind, we play them again in the last home and away game of the year -4.40pm on the 30th August; we will have to fix things then. I won’t be at evening Church that night.
I had a poor week’s tipping, only 4/8 - my son in law gained one on me, but we have quite a break between 2nd and 3rd.
In the NRL, the Titans can get me 4/5. My dad is 4 ahead of me and my second brother 2 in front; I think they only have 2 so far, but my dad can’t remember what he tipped. Now that’ sad. Two in front of the entire family and he can’t even remember what he tipped!!!

Jeremiah 29:11

4/5 for me in the NRL tipping too, dropped the Warriors game.

My friends’ soccer team (Hurstville Glory Fs) ended up winning a postponed Sunday game as well by 8-1.  Combined with the 21-0 that puts them 4th on the ladder and they could easily go to 3rd next week.  Needs 4th to be in the finals with about 6 games to go.

Dad and my brother both got 3/5 so I gained one on each of them. Son-in-law got 5/5 so he is only one behind me, but I missed the Rabbitohs.
The Penrith Waratahs had a good 36-0 win, Nathan converted his own try (he can kick them from anywhere at training but has been missing them every Saturday, so this was very significant). There are still two undefeated teams, but the Warras’ For & Against margin is much better.

I only managed 3 out of 7 in NRL - and they were the Panthers, Warriors and Tigers.

Still having better results with AFL. This week I again tipped a “whopper” 8 out of 8 ( my third full card in 9 weeks ) - so that’s another Hungry Jack’s Whopper Burger for me - as that’s what you get from the sponsors at footytips.com.au competitions for “whopper tipping ;)

With Hawthorn’s 45 point margin over Collingwood ( who had defeated the Bulldogs by one point last week ), I now feel that the Hawks might yet be able to finish in the final 8. Finals series here we come !

Enjoy your whopper Kev!

I got 5/7 in NRL.  Got the Eels right, but dropped the Broncos and Panthers games.  That’ll teach me not to tip the Broncos for some time!

Local soccer was washed out, sunny days but wet grounds.

Wow - what a finish. Imagine leading by 24 at 3/4 time - and then seeing Geelong run Hawthorn down to win by one point in the last minute of the game. The Hawks had their chances but in the end blew it. They really had to win this won to get into the final 8 - now the only ( slim ) chance they have is to win their final 5 games - against Port Adelaide, St Kilda, Adelaide, Richmond and Essendon ;)

Shooting for 6/8 tonight in the NRL, and a great win by the Dragons on Sunday.  Didn’t expect them to beat the Warriors so easily!

I’m also sitting on 5/7 - and have gone for the Rabbitohs tonight to make it 6/8 hopefully. Only managed 5/8 for AFL - having opted in vain for Hawthorn, West Coast and Essendon.

Well the Rabbitohs had a convincing victory - so I got my 6/8. My total NRL score to date is 86 - whilst the top tipper in my competition has 93 ( and I’m in 4th spot ).

Meanwhile in AFL I’m on 89 - with the top tipper on 98 ( and I’m running 5th ). For friendly comparisons, how’s everybody else’s totals going ?

Also, is there any interest in also having a tipping competition amongst ourselves next year ? If so, I’m willing to put my hand up to set it up.

[ Edited: 28 July 2009 09:50 AM by Kevin Goddard]

Wouldn’t mind joining a comp.  I have used footytips.com.au for the last four years.

NRL - this round I also got 6/8 for a combined 95.  4th in the work comp and 1st in my mum’s work comp (she uses my tips but her comp adds State of Origin tips - got 3/3 from that).

Don’t know enough to do AFL tipping.

NRL - 3/8 for 98.  That’ll teach me for NOT tipping the Dragons last weekend!

AFL - And didn’t the Swans come close to inflicting St Kilda their first loss of the season!  Close but no cigar.

I haven’t posted here for a little while; I had to put in two weeks tips together as I had to go to Bendigo for a family funeral, and so the week before last was a bit of a disaster, tipping wise because I didn’t get the chance to take into account current form. Plus I was cheering for the wrong teams in a couple of games because I had forgotten which teams I had tipped!
Nonetheless, although my son in law has caught me in the AFL, I am still in front on margins (we have to pick the margin in one match per round). We both got 7/8 this week (my niece the mad West Coast fan got 8 but I just couldn’t pick the Eagles.) Elly and I are on 103.
In the NRL I started this week terribly, missed the first four matches, then came home well to finish with 4/8 to be on 96. Up to last week I was three behind my dad and one behind my second brother with a fair gap to fourth, but the results aren’t up for them yet. I am hopeful that it was such a tough round that at least I won’t have dropped far.

Jeremiah 29:11

Won’t comment on tips yet but aren’t the Dragons going well!  Another 13+ win, this time on the road against Penrith.

And as for AFL, what’s happening to the Bulldogs?  They appear to have lost their way a little…

Facebook profile at here.

Well Arthur, we all wish we knew what had happened to the Bulldogs yesterday. They have only lost one in a row, but the next seven weeks will be tough. However, be assured that they will be playing into September, hopefully to the end.
I’ve got 6/7 so far in the NRL (couldn’t believe the Bunnies could roll Manly); it’s a strange feeling to be hoping for a Brisbane win!
In the AFL, not so hot, 5/7 so far and quite sure it will end up at 5/8 (Port Adelaide are a very long way behind at the moment). The only good news is that everyone else took the same teams EXCEPT that I am the only one in the family who picked Collingwood, so I will go back to one clear of my son in law and a long way in front of third.
And this week the A league started, and I got 3/5 - not good, but with my totally non-existant knowledge of the A league, I am always surprised when I get ANY right.
