Arthur Lee - 04 April 2009 05:20 PM

Go you mighty Dragons!  Yeah!

Off-topic: Was wearing my Dragons jersey throughout Hurstville over lunch today and was amazed that four strangers came up and made enthusiastic pro-Dragons statements :=).

Hi Arthur, Why don’t you hop on a Manly ferry and wear your St George jersey down the Manly Esplanade. I’m sure you’ll get a very “friendly” and “enthusiastic” welcome from the Sea Eagles fans too ;)

Anyone else notice that in the AFL and NRL both reigning premiers are still winless?
And just quietly, the Swans win over the Hawks was brilliant to watch. CARN THE BLOODS!!

Hands up the people who care. Except for poor Kevin who went through the horror of not only being totally out-numbered on Saturday but also seeing his team lose -been there, done that. I was at the SCG once and estimated that there were a total of three of us supporting the mighty Bulldogs at the ground. There MIGHT have been a couple more, but they weren’t cheering whenever we scored. And we were actually the last Victorian team to win in Sydney, so I can feel your pain.
But as far as Manly is concerned, care factor equals, umm, ZERO!

Thank you Jean for your loving concern ;)  But no need to “poor Kevin” me BTW. I’m bigger than that.

Actually I was surprised at the wide smattering of Hawks regalia among the crowd. We had good raised seats ( row 25 just around from Southern goalposts. ) and the rain was absent. Those giant screens at ANZ Stadium are really helpful too. Up until half-time I thought we had an even match, but the Swans actually scored 88 to 48 points in the last 2 quarters - and ran out deserved winners. The Swans really impressed me ( they are after all my No. 2 team - being a Sydney-sider after all. ) I thought Adam Goodes was brilliant - and you just can’t write off Barry Hall can you ? What an old trooper he is. The one minus point on the night was the inconsistency with umpiring. You’ld think with all those officials on the ground ( 7 men in green plus two goal umpires ) they would get it right more often - and I’m talking about inconsistent decisions against both teams.

If the Swans can keep that form up, then expect a great season from them. They only have 3 more games at the ANZ Stadium - but they sure have made it their own.

I ended up with 4 out of 8 in my AFL tips. Perhaps I should have followed my son’s lead and just pick the “home” teams - he scored 7 !

Kevin, I think that inconsistant umpiring/refereeing is one of the most frustrating things about watching sport. If they gave the same (wrong) decision for the whole game it would be annoying, but when sometimes they pay and other times the penalise the same thing (was it holding the ball or holding the man, a mark or a throw?) it makes it incredibly difficult for the teams and the spectators.
I got 6/8 in the AFL which I was quite relieved about. My nephew actually got 8/8 which is unbelievable. (BTW he was on the same flight as the Hawks on Friday from Melbourne to Sydney-I don’t know if that influenced him to chose the Swans). I got 6/6 in the Super 14 (but I’ve done that a few times already this season) but in the NRL I am going VERY poorly- the only winners I’ve picked were Canterbury and Newcastle. Maybe the Cowboys will help me out tonight.

@ Kevin

Funny you raise Manly.  Back in the 90s when I was a lil kid and introduced to the game by primary school mates, I was torn between supporting the mightiest Manly and the mighty Dragons.  Both ARL-affiliated juggernauts at the time, so I despised Brisbane with a passion.

Decided on the Dragons due to default (geographical location) and haven’t looked back since.  Still I wonder what it would be like being a Manly supporter in the St George area - there’s quite a few but I’m sure they cop a lot of flak.  Especially when they’re now 0-4.

@ Jean

2/8 in NRL tipping (Canterbury & Souths) like you haha, I didn’t tip the Dragons, I know of quite a few who got one or zero so at least that’s some consolation.  NRL is quite competitive these days, not like the English Soccer where only 3-4 teams dominate.

Neither of the AFL rounds so far this year have been particularly difficult (there are a lot of people on 12 or 13 out of 16).  Round 3 looks a fair bit harder, however. Any thoughts on Freo v the Crows?

I think it’s going to be an awfully long season for the Dockers. The Crows have problems but they should beat Freo.

Seven from eight in the AFL. I can’t believe Essendon beat Carlton. On form it should never have happened!
Hopefully seven from eight in the NRL too, if the Bulldogs can hang on.

Yep 7/8 in the NRL.  But there were two in my comp that got perfect rounds!

I’ll never tip the sharks again on their form…

Only managed 5 in AFL and 4 in NRL. Three in one of my NRL comp’s also scored perfect rounds - one of them even got the margin spot on !

In ours, no-one got a perfect score, but my husband and I both got 7 in the AFL, I got 7 in the NRL and we both were lousy in the Super 14.
We are actually in the Optus on-line comps which have 26,000 (NRL), 35,000 (AFL) and 10,000 (S14) but we have our own little family comp within that which is what we REALLY care about-it’s good to beat strangers but it’s far better to beat your relatives! I’m coming 168th in the S14 overall, but it’s much more important to be two clear in the family comp.

Shooting for 7/8 if the Storm win the NRL match tonight.

Should be on a full score after the ref kept siding with the Knights against the Dragons (I was at the game too)!  Well, the ref can’t be on your side every time…

I am hoping for 6/8 if the Storm get up-I don’t think I’ll be making the mistake of picking the Sharks again (and I missed Newcastle too). In the AFL, I did abyssmally, but hopefully so did everyone else. In the Super 14 I got 5/7 (I picked the Waratahs and the Sharks and thought they were sure things!), but the exciting thing in the Super 14 is that I’ve moved to 67th out of more than 10,000 tippers, only three behind the leaders. Unfortunately withonly 4 weeks to go, I may not have time to catch them, but in the last couple of weeks leaders tend to do silly things in an effort to finish on top, so maybe I’ve got a hope. I’ll be happy with top 50. Actually, I’d be very happy to even finish top 100. And I’m three in front of anyone else in my family!
And in the most important result of the weekend, the Penrith Waratahs U12/2s won their first match of the season 20-8

HELP NEEDED

Can someone out there who is all understanding, has incredible knowledge about football and is full of compassion please explain to me…..

....  WHY oh   WHY did I pick Port Adelaide over St Kilda ( who demolished PA by 66 points ! ) ?
WHY, WHY, WHY ???

No help needed on my end.  Go you mighty Dragons!!!

I also went for the Dragons/Saints in NRL - what a whitewash it ended up -  29 nil.

Did anyone catch the concluding AFL minutes of Essendon running down Collingwood ?

I ( and nearly everyone else ) expected the Magpies to win easily - but I was in great admiration of how Essendon came back and won the day in the last minute of the game ! Maybe it was just the ANZAC spirit of never giving up. “Congratulations to the Bombers”- a phrase I have never used before !

Can someone out there who is all understanding, has incredible knowledge about football and is full of compassion please explain to me…..

....  WHY oh   WHY did I pick Port Adelaide over St Kilda ( who demolished PA by 66 points ! ) ?
WHY, WHY, WHY ???

Because in every round there is at least one upset result. This week it happened to be Richmond and Fremantle (neither of which I picked) but some people (including you and quite a few of the “experts”) thought it would be Port.

Melbourne obviously don’t have a chance according to this Daily Telegraph halftime score :

After an encouraging win over Richmond last week, Melbourne has been flat all match, failing to score a goal in the first half.

Halftime scores: Adelaide 4.6 (30) to Adelaide 0.3 (3).

Well, if the Titans can down the Panthers tomorrow I’ll have a perfect 8/8 in the NRL (a draw counts as a win no matter who you picked), but a disappointing 4/8 in the AFL and 3/6 in the Super 14. However, to my surprise I actually improved my position in the S14, now 46th out of 10,000+. Still a good chance to be in the prizes, but at the very least I should make top 100.

Rotten Panthers! They never win when I tip them and now they go and do this to me. And to add insult to injury, we were out last night and had to negotiate through the triumphant Panthers fans (all ten of them) to get home. They were going around the roundabout ten times and generally having fun (and trying to warm up) -when I saw that I just KNEW I was in strife!

Jeremiah 29:11

Apparently two people from my work comp got a perfect score in the NRL!  Unbelievable.

My second brother got eight, but he has more faith in the Panthers than me. Three of us in the family got seven and the rest got six. The AFL was were we all came unstuck-my mum got five which was our best result.

Shockingly bad video ref decision last night ... and I am a dragons fan.

 Signature

Well, the Super 14 tipping comp is over and , ta dah, I came 84th out of 10,515. actually, I was only 4 points behind the winner, equal with heaps of others. I could possibly claim to be equal 56th, but then they separate us on the basis of our margins (tip the margin in one game per round). Three weeks ago I was 46th, then got 6/7 and dropped to 62nd, then only got 4/7 and dropped to 167th, so I am overjoyed with my 7/7 this week. A top 100 position, yay me!!!
In the AFL I’ve got 5/5 so far, and in the NRL the only thing stopping me having a perfect score is what was probably the single worst refereeing decision this year. This looks like being one of those weeks with lots of high scores.
