Football thread (League/Union/AFL/Soccer)

What teams do you go for?  Looking forward to the new seasons where applicable?

I’m a Dragons tragic (league).  Don’t really follow union or AFL, but I play some soccer for fun.

My AFL team is the Mighty Hawks ( Hawthorn ) - current premiers !

I lost my passion for ARL years ago - when many of all the “old” teams disappeared. Anyone here remember Balmain, Newtown, North Sydney ? And how can a sports code be run by lawyers and accountants ?

I have never been interested in Union - and cannot see the point of soccer. Just can’t get excited about a nil all draw.

Living in Adelaide, I like the Crows [AFL]and the Power, so I’m having two bob each way.
Wests Tigers are my ARL team because I’m a third generation Balmain person, having been born in Drummoyne and my Dad & Mum and paternal Grandpa, all born in Leichhardt just a few miles from Leichhardt Oval.
Union, I lean towrds the Waratahs.
Football/Soccer - A League Adelaide United [the unluckiest team] and in EPL either Liverpool or West Ham United.

That’s why I don’t go for News Limited or ex-Super League clubs.  You’ll find that all professional sports codes are run by corporates, lawyers and accountants :=P.

Hey David,

I must have been extra tired last night when I read that - and wondered what you were on about - or just what you were on ;)

But I finally got the joke about 6am this morning. I suddenly realised that you were talking about thugby. I am still laughing at your joke - and myself for failing to pick it up sooner.

Cheers,  Kevin

So you’re all conveniently ignoring the AFL preseason fight between two members of the same team?  All I can do to the “thugby” joke is lol, and at the irony not so much at the joke itself.

That said, go the Dragons!

That fight took place at Carlton, who have been a joke themselves for the last 7 or 8 years, so it doesn’t really count.

I watch a bit of all codes and quite enjoy them, but there are only two teams that REALLY get my blood flowing; the mighty Penrith Waratahs (rugby league) under 12/2s (defending premiers from 2008 U11) and the equally mighty Western Bulldogs (aka Footscray) in the AFL. I had a committment to the Penrith Waratahs U9/1 last year, but my favourite 9yo decided he didn’t want to play footie this year. I wanted to go to the Bulldogs v Swans practice game tomorrow but couldn’t get tickets, so will content myself with 2 games live, 20 home & away games on TV and hopefully a few finals again. I expect to see all but a couple of the Waratahs’ games live (there’s no TV coverage!)

Then all acts of thuggery don’t count either! :=P

We’ll see about that.  I hope that Bennett genuinely changes the laid-back bludge culture of the Dragons, rather than the other way around!

Fantastic start to the NRL season!  Although I didn’t watch the Dragons v Melbourne (didn’t enjoy The Watchmen with friends instead), the Souths v Roosters game was highly entertaining!

Yes - a great start indeed. Good to see the media just talking about on-field footy rather than those “off” off-field antics. I’m sitting pretty with 6 out of 7 winners. Only missed out on the other one by a last minute switch from Broncos to Cowboys - who managed to miss out by one point ! If the Tigers win tonight, I expect to be on ( or near ) the top of our church Footy Tipping comp. Do any other churches have one going ?  ( We also have one running for the mighty AFL which starts on Thursday 26. )

I’m 7 of 8 only getting the Dogs wrong (using the office tipping in footytips).  You tipped the Dogs over the Eagles?!

 Signature

Yes - surprisingly I did. The Bulldogs are usually at the bottom of my list - but this week I just couldn’t choose to pick Manly because of their ( the whole club’s ) behaviour during the previous week. I just thought that with all the internal turmoil that “a house divided cannot stand”.
And a clipped sea eagle cannot soar !

I got 7 from 8 in my tipping comp-it’s the Optus on-line with about 22,000 tippers. (I think a couple of hundred tipsters got 8, but I’m doing OK.)  We have to pick the margin in one game-I picked the Tigers by 6 instead of 8. I was chortling on Sunday afternoon when I saw that the Titans were in front, I just assumed that all I had to worry about was the Monday game. I figured that the Roosters v Rabbitohs game was a given. Who’d a thought it???

Shocker this week in the tipping.  At least the Dragons won :=).

Yay, the footy season has started at last! Not such happy news for Richmond fans (I’m not sure how I’ll tell my Richmond-tragic aunt that I actually tipped Carlton, but who could have guessed the margin?).
I have to start going to morning Church most weeks until September- kick off at 6.10pm this week means that I’d be arriving at night Church just in time for supper. Maybe.

 Signature

Jeremiah 29:11

Why, oh why, did I tip Richmond to win by 24 ???  So that’s me with a margin’s century deficit already.
Still going for Hawthorn to win the Grand Final replay tonight against Geelong ;)

6 out of 8 in the tipping comp for me, but most important of all, WHAT ABOUT THOSE DOGGIES??? Freo didn’t play that badly but they were just blown away.
Oh, and because WA finished daylight saving and we didn’t, the game didn’t start until 7.10, so I could have gone to night Church and just missed the first quarter and a bit, but I enjoyed morning Church instead (and it was the same sermon) so I’m glad I swapped around. I’ll have a dilemma in round 4 when we kick off at 4.10 and I’m on data so have to be at Church a bit after 5 to set everything up. I’ll probably watch the first half then get my mum to text me the scores at 3/4 and full time. The rest of the season will be fine-no late Sunday games for the Bulldogs at least.

Another week - and another chance for football tipping redemption !
In NRL I’m on a medium 14 after 3 rounds - and have bravely gone for Panthers over Tigers, Rabbitohs over Warriors, Sharks over Bulldogs and Knights over Manly. Brave ? Or just foolhardy ? Time will tell.

In AFL, I only managed 4 in Round 1. And this week I’ve gone with the favourites except for Fremantle over Essendon, West Coast Eagles over Port Adelaide and ( surprisingly ) North Melbourne over the Western Bulldogs ! It will be an interesting weekend of footy ( both codes ) all round.

Tomorrow night, we’re off to our first live AFL match in ages.  We’re off to the Sydney Olympic Stadium ( yes that’s it’s REAL name - not some Bank’s name - as far as we’re concerned ) - to see the Swans vs Hawks battle. Naturally we’ll be among the minority in the gold and brown colours ;)  And we’ll definitely be outnumbered by all those keen Sydney fans in their red and white - but we’re looking forward to a great game - and hoping the showers hold off for those few hours. Up there Cazaly !!

Well I had a good start getting 7 out of 8 last week in the AFL tipping. I always start well though, and drop off in the second half of the season.
Will be there tomorrow night at Stadium Australia in red and white. Hopefully there will be more people there than for last year’s final against the roos.
Up there for Sydney!

[NRL] Go you Dragons for tonight!

(Not tipping them though haha)

Tipped five away teams…

No live games for me until next month - I have tickets for the Bulldogs v Swans game in Canberra on 30th May and MIGHT get to a game when I’m in Melbourne earlier in May but that will be my total live games for the year unless we play the Swans in a final in Sydney (which is highly unlikely).

Go you mighty Dragons!  Yeah!

Off-topic: Was wearing my Dragons jersey throughout Hurstville over lunch today and was amazed that four strangers came up and made enthusiastic pro-Dragons statements :=).
