Truth and justice

Brad Ruting (Letters, February 27) suggests Marcus Einfeld’s wrongdoing should be overlooked, in case we forget his “good deeds and successes”. What hogwash. Our justice system is not based on karma, whereby good deeds somehow negate bad. Tall poppy syndrome may be alive and well, but let us not confuse that with the system of justice whereby lawbreakers are punished - a system Einfeld is better equipped than most to understand.

Greed still with us
The reports of greed’s demise are greatly exaggerated (“Greed is a spent force, say researchers”, March 9). Storing up wealth in savings can just as easily be an expression of greed - as the biblical parable of the rich fool bears out (Luke 12:15-21). If charities were to experience a rise in donations in proportion to government bonuses, then perhaps we could consider greed to have taken a mortal blow.

Today’s SMH has a double whammy

Police karma
Police officer Jason Puxty (“Between Buddhism and hard yards of police work”, March 12) does some good evangelism. But does he really believe that if he uses force in policing “there will be a karmic price to pay”? If so, why take the job on in the first place? Far healthier for a career in policing is an actual belief in integrity and justice. So let’s hear from some Christian police as well. Gordon Cheng Gladesville

Parental poverty not a given
I’m glad Michael Dockery has produced some commonsense research results on the cost of bringing up children (“Married with children: a bonus you can count on”, March 12). Some previously published estimates have suggested that our five children must have been raised in abject poverty, which they weren’t.

Watch the brains

THE Anglican Church often can come across as a beacon for tea drinkers, equivocators and hand-wringers. It has of course become a tighter ship in Sydney under the leadership of Archbishop Peter Jensen, at least judging by the message board outside St Michael’s in Sydney’s Surry Hills: “If you are too open-minded, your brains will fall out.” It’s probably just coincidence that the church and its message were on the route of last weekend’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.

From today’s “Column 8” in the SMH :

“On the message board out the front of a church in Surry Hills is the message ‘If you are too open-minded, your brains will fall out,’ ” we are told by an astonished Rebecca Prescott, of Paddington. “Is it possible to know the point at which you are being too open-minded? Do you receive a warning from your brain before it falls out?”
