‘99.9pc certainty’ of Noah’s Ark discovery on Mount Ararat

CHINESE and Turkish evangelical explorers believe they may have found Noah’s Ark - 4000m up a mountain in Turkey.

The team said it had recovered wooden specimens from a structure on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey that carbon dating proved was 4800 years old, around the same time the ark is said to have been afloat.

“It’s not 100 per cent that it is Noah’s Ark but we think it is 99.9 per cent that this is it,” said Yeung Wing-cheung, a Hong Kong documentary filmmaker and member of the 15-strong team from Noah’s Ark Ministries International.

The structure had several compartments, some with wooden beams, which were believed to house animals, he said.

The group of evangelical archaeologists ruled out an established human settlement on the grounds that one had never been found above 3500m in the vicinity, Mr Yeung said.

Local Turkish officials would ask the central government in Ankara to apply for UNESCO World Heritage status so the site could be protected while a major archaeological dig was conducted, he added.

The biblical story says God decided to flood the earth after seeing how corrupt it had become, and told Noah to build an ark and fill it with two of every animal species.

After the flood waters receded, the Bible says, the ark came to rest on a mountain. Many believe that Mount Ararat, the highest point in the region, is where the ark and her inhabitants came aground.

How many Noah’s Arks have they now found on Mount Ararat ? Are they all just coming along the same remains ? I can recall many similar stories over the years.

Good grief. Ararat is certainly a money spinner for Turkey. Looks like there was a fleet of arks. One for mammals, one for reptiles, one for insects, one for bacteria etc.

AS believers in the literal truth of the Bible, they say they always knew it was there. Now their search may be over, for this explorer is almost certain he is standing inside Noah’s Ark.

He is one of a 15-strong team of fundamentalist Christians who found seven large wooden compartments beneath snow and volcanic debris at the top of Turkey’s Mt Ararat, the biblical resting place of the Ark.

“It’s not 100 per cent that it is Noah’s Ark but we think it is 99.9 per cent that this is it,” said Yeung Wing-cheung, a filmmaker among the team.

The team said wood taken from the site, which is almost 4000m above sea level, dated to 2800BC. If it is the Ark, the discovery would be the greatest in the history of archaeology and bear out one of the Bible’s most famous stories.

The team of Turkish and Chinese researchers from Noah’s Ark Ministries International in Hong Kong said they made the discovery in October.

At a press conference yesterday to announce the discovery, team member Panda Lee said: “I saw a structure built with plank-like timber.

“Each plank was about eight inches wide. I could see tenons, proof of ancient construction predating the use of metal nails.

“We walked about 100m to another site. I could see broken wood frag-ments in a glacier, some 20m long.”

The structure had several compartments, some with wooden beams, the team said. The wooden walls of one compartment were smooth and curved while the video shown by the explorers revealed doors, staircases and nails.

They said the wood appeared to be cypress. According to the Bible, the Ark was built from gopher wood.

The group ruled out the find as a human settlement. None had been found so high up in that area. They are keeping the exact location secret.

British archaeologist Mike Pitt said the evangelical explorers had yet to produce compelling evidence.

Floating facts :

- IN THE book of Genesis, the Ark is the equivalent of 137m long by 23m wide and 14m high. That’s taller than a three-storey building and with a deck the size of 36 tennis courts.

- CHRISTIANS argue that Noah needed 40,000 animals to represent every kind of creature. Sceptics say Noah would have needed room for at least 1.5million species.

- NOAH, or Nuh, is one of the main prophets of Islam. In the Koran, his wife is said to drown in the flood.

As there were flood stories written before the Biblical account, can we be sure that the Ark found in the above link is from the Biblical story?

The mountain north of Lake Van that today is called Ararat, received its name in the Middle Ages. The author of the second-century BCE Book of Jubilees (5.28, 10.15) states that the Ark landed on “Mount Lubar” in “the land of Ararat”, and the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus still knew that “Ararat” referred to a summit south of Lake Van and mentions a tradition that identifies Noah’s landing site with Mount Baris in Gordyene (Jewish Antiquities, 1.93). Both Josephus and Berossus refer to the presence of bitumen near the place where the Ark landed. The Quran also renders “Ararat” with the name of a Gordyenian mountain, Al-Gudi.

As it happens, in the southeast of Turkey, there is a mountain called Cudi Daği, and in the nearby city of Cizre, on the banks of the Tigris, eastern Christians and Muslims venerate the tomb of Noah/Nuh. The Cudi Daği has a better claim to being the place mentioned in the ancient sources as the Ark’s landing site.
