Good one Luke! That’s giving us the big picture - yuk yuk.

But seriously, I thought that the extinction of dinosaurs, courtesy of a gigantic meteor hitting the planet, only left us with small mammals which continued to exist after that event?

Homo sapiens is believed to be well after that time period.

I was interested to hear that scientists have discovered that many dinosaurs had feathers on their backs well before flying dinosaurs existed. It is thought they provided warmth to these colder blooded reptiles, as well as decorative reasons for attracting mates.

I wasn’t sure where else to post this wacky piece - seems like Ron L Hubbard might have been right after all :

We’re all aliens, says scientist

The Sun     From: NewsCore February 04, 2010   5:33AM

THE human race began as microbes brought to Earth by comets millions of years ago according to a British scientist.

British professor Chandra Wickramasinghe said: “We are all aliens. We share a cosmic ancestry.

“Each time a new planetary system forms, a few surviving microbes find their way into comets.

“These then multiply and seed other planets. We are thus part of a connected chain that extends over a large volume of the cosmos. Evidence is pointing inexorably in this direction.”

Prof Wickramasinghe, an astrobiologist at Cardiff University, said the first “seeds of life” were deposited on Earth 3800 million years ago, The Sun reported.

He said life through the universe was transferred from planet to planet over billions of years as comets hit them and pushed matter into space.

But Prof Wickramasinghe accepted that the theory did not explain how life originally came into being.

He and his late colleague - astronomer and science fiction writer Sir Fred Hoyle - championed the theory of panspermia from the 1960s.

It says that life did not start on Earth but was brought here from space.

The professor said: “Although we have no definite knowledge how life started in the first place, once started, its spread in the cosmos and survival is inevitable.”

Dinosaur footprints lost as rock face crumbles

From correspondents in La Paz, Bolivia From:AFP February 04, 2010 11:51AM

ABOUT 300 dinosaur footprints believed to be around 65 million years old were lost when the rock wall that contained them cleaved off and crumbled, a Bolivian national park director said.

300 Parque Cretacio director Wilmer Astete told ATB television yesterday that heavy rain and seismic instability had weakened a slab of rock measuring 80 metres in Cal Orcko, which means calcium peak in the Quechua language.

“That rock wall is about 140,000 square metres and part of it collapsed. We’ve lost 300 footprints” made by two titanosaurs, he added.

The dinosaur tracks were destroyed on Tuesday, Mr Astete said, adding that efforts to safeguard the entire rock wall from fracturing would cost up to $US30 million ($33.9 million) a year, far exceeding the reach of the park administration’s budget.

Despite the loss, the park remains the site of one of the world’s largest collection of dinosaur tracks, Mr Astete said.

Some 5000 footprints left by 300 species of dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period (65-145 million years ago) are embedded in the rock face at Cal Orcko, which is located a few kilometres outside Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital.

Local authorities said they were studying plans to protect the archeological site from further damage.
