Books

Read any books besides the Bible?

I love action and crime fiction.  Right now actually reading a Christian book called “The Reason For God” by Tim Keller.  Only on Chapter 2 - it seems like a good read so far.

I’m reading “Why the Universe is the Way it is.”
by Hugh Ross.

It’s a (Christian) scientist’s take on astronomy and an excellent response to YECS distortions.

I’m looking forward to finally reading Predictably Irrational after seeing a couple of great TED talks by the author here. If you’ve got a spare 15m, check out Dan Ariely on our buggy moral code—very fascinating stuff! :)

Hey Owen, make sure you also check the YECS responses to Ross’s distortions ;)

”What happens gives the strong impression that Harry dies, discovers an afterlife in a place called King’s Cross – a striking reference from a Christian perspective, and comes back to life.

”The effect of his death has been to render impotent the power of evil. That is a Christian narrative which is almost impossible not to recognise.”

Hi Luke,
how often do you watch TED talks? I subscribe via iTunes. Some are lame, but some are just fantastic and unexpected. TED has profoundly sharpened my thinking in a number of areas. The great thing about TEDx, which is the local version such as TEDx Sydney, was actually meeting the presenters after the talks! I got to meet Claude Lewenz author of “How to build a village” and that was definitely in the top 10 moments that year.

(TEDx Sydney are not online, but you can see his talks here).

Wiki ‘Lazarus Rising’ (John Howard’s new autobiography) and find:

Plot summary:
This novel continues the situation on the planet Kingdom from the previous novel, Kingdom’s Fury. Dominic DeTomas, formerly head of the secret police of Kingdom, is now dictator and has put together a new fascist government that strongly resembles that of Nazi Germany. DeTomas’s policies engendered resentment among certain parts of the populace, and this festers into an uprising. While the mild-mannered inhabitants of Kingdom might not expect to succeed against an implacably violent police state, the uprising is advised and led by an amnesiac Confederation Marine who had been captured by the alien Skinks and later released when the Skinks were driven off Kingdom.

I’ve been reading ‘Bright Lights, Dark Nights’.  This is a non-fiction book (surprise as I rarely read non-fiction other than the Bible) with various generally prominent Australian Christians’ experiences of Christianity, suffering and depression.

It’s quite a good and easy read.
