TV shows

Oh well. Culture’s change, especially when half of society is utterly bankrupted. The average European uses half the oil of the average American or Australian, and that’s because most cities have traditional city cores and good public transport. I wouldn’t want to live out west in a few years when it costs 3 or 4 times as much to fill up.

Expect emergency car pooling, lots of bankruptcies, and much social disruption. Except this conversation should probably continue over here in the peak oil thread.

Right now I’m looking for a new series our family can watch. We’ve just done Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis… any ideas? Youngest viewer is Amelia, our (fairly mature) 7.5 year old girl.

[ Edited: 04 November 2010 07:56 PM by Dave Lankshear]

Stargate Universe is very good, but might be a bit too mature for a 7.5 year old. Fair bit of sex.

Hellcats is surprisingly good, aside from the fairly typical misportrayal of Christianity.

Final note on Dharavi:

It also got me wondering what part the caste system had to play in all this.
  ...
I would also like to learn more about the history and development of Dharavi.

(Me, at #93)
From checking out the wiki, I noted that they are mostly Dalit, and enterprising hard-working skilled ones at that.  So I’ve come to the opinion this is actually at its heart a middle-class community, who by circumstances and the caste system are living in these horrible unsanitary conditions, but nonetheless doing it pretty well.  Hmm.

Anyone remember the Superman TV series from the 50’s ? For decades, most people believed the story that the actor George Reeves committed suicide because he had become typecast and couldn’t get any other acting jobs. And it was only a few weeks ago that I heard a radio show that revealed he was actually murdered. And also that a movie about the case was made in 2006. It has come out on DVD but has been hard to track down.

BUT I now find that it will be shown on 7TWO tonight at 9.30pm - how about that ?

Hollywoodland    9:30pm - 0:00am         Classified : MA   Genre : CrimeMovie

“After TV’s Superman George Reeves’ death is ruled a suicide, a down-and-out private detective sets out to prove the Man of Steel was really the victim of foul play. But as quickly as he finds suspects, he also finds himself ensnared in a side of Hollywood totally devoid of glamour, a place where truth and justice are not so easily found.”

“A uniquely compelling exploration of fame and identity. The drama, inspired by one of Hollywood’s most infamous real-life mysteries, follows a 1950s private detective who, investigating the mysterious death of “Superman” star George Reeves, uncovers unexpected connections to his own life as the case turns more personal. The torrid affair Reeves had with the wife of a studio executive might hold the key to the truth. ”

The cast includes Adrien Brody, Diane Lane, Ben Affleck and that always impressive Bob Hoskins. Isn’t it amazing how in the end truth will out - and lies be revealed - either this side of Eternity or the other.

George reeves’  bio can be found at :  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001660/

Cool, thanks for that! I remember that funny, slightly camp show. One episode had slightly radioactive reptiles from underground. It scared me, but I was only about 7 when watching the re-runs.

I have just become aware of a special ( 3 nights in a row ) Teledrama starting on SBS One TONIGHT at 10.05pm. All up there’s 6 hours in the telling of this tale :

Red Riding Trilogy: 1974    10:05pm - 0:00am Classified : M   Genre : ThrillerMovie
Set in Yorkshire against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Ripper murders but more a tale of the time and the rampant police corruption that marred it, this is the first part of a trilogy of films adapted from a series of novels by David Pearce. The story centres on a young Yorkshire journalist trying to solve the increasingly vexing case of a serial killer on the loose.

This series is described as dark and compelling - and, due to the late showing,  may be one to record on DVD - together with 1980 (WED) and finally 1983 (THURS). Sounds intriguing - and the brief trailer I saw promises plenty.

Hey Dave et al,

I just noticed that the classic 1962 version of “Day of the Triffids” is on late tonight on ABC1 at 12.40am to 2.25am - so set your DVD recorders for a treat.

OR you could stay up to watch it - and pop outside to observe the Gemenids Meteor Shower for 2010. This site is probably for the Northern Hemisphere :  http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=7876  but I heard on the news that we should be able to see them between 1am and dawn. You’ll need to track down any further details yourselves. Enjoy.

Doctor Who to marry Doctor Who’s daughter

Child of two Doctors to marry one, be given away by the other

By Lester Haines       Posted in Entertainment, 5th January 2011

Doctor Who the 10th, David Tennant, is planning to get hitched to his fictional daughter Georgia Moffett, who also happens to be the real daughter of his fictional fifth incarnation.

Moffet is the real-life fruit of former Time Lord Peter Davison’s loins, and played Who offspring Jenny in 2008’s The Doctor’s Daughter. Davison and his future son-in-law Tennant appeared together in 2007’s Children in Need Doctor Who special Time Crash, well after Ms Moffet really existed, but before she was spawned as her soon-to-be husband’s television child.

Paradoxically, this means that Davison and Tennant came together as both individuals and the same person, while one was the father of the future daughter of the other.

Tennant and Moffett met on the set of The Doctor’s Daughter, and intend to walk up the aisle on New Year’s Day 2012. According to the Telegraph, a “source” said: “They are besotted with each other and can’t wait to tie the knot.”

Davison, who occupied the Tardis from 1981 to 1984, said of the forthcoming union: “It’s great because David is a genuinely nice guy – and also a very fine Doctor.”

I say, is that a Tardis at the bottom of your garden - and is there a Dr in the house ?

My faith in humanity has been revived. Apparently most people are discerning - and turning off that pompous left-biased conservative-hating b*******g George Negus.

  Ten’s news experiment under pressure

Simon Canning     From: The Australian     January 28, 2011   11:39AM

MORE than 300,000 viewers deserted The Ten Network’s new evening news show, “6PM with George Negus” for an hour last night before returning for the 7pm Project.

The revamped News at Five attracted a strong audience, but nearly half deserted when Negus’s flagship current afairs show went to air on Thursday.

While advertisers and media buyers remain on the fence over week one of the Ten Network’s new evening news line up headed by Negus, a troubling trend emerged last night when viewers deserted the channel for an hour while Negus was on air before returning for the 7pm Project.
Ten’s revamped News at Five attracted 765,000 viewers in all people rankings before more more than 330,000 people switched off as 6PM with George Negus went to air.
The show has seen a steady decline in viewers after a promising, if unspectacular start to its year with 606,000 viewers on its Monday debut.

Last night that number had slumped to just 429,000.
However, 300,000 viewers returned to the station for the 7PM Project.
Seven’s Australian Open Tennis coverage topped the night with an audience of 1.36 million.

When last seen, George was crumpled up in the corner bellowing his favourite war-cry “why ?”

I thought I read a passing reference a few days ago that “An Inconvenient Truth” was going to be aired on free-to-air TV during the next week, but I can’t find any clues. Does anyone else know anything ? Thanks

I’m watching ‘Can Of Worms’ again now that it’s on a reasonable time (post Masterchef, COW’s now on Ten Mondays 8.30pm or close enough to it).

Anyone watch X Factor this year?  I’m going to sit it out this year til the last four weeks or so.

Arthur I understand your sentiments. Maybe it has something to do with a certain judge missing ,but I judge the hour of “X Factor” on Monday night the most entertaining hour of film or TV I have ever watched.  The sexy hunk who tried to sing amid hilarious repartee with the judges made me almost choke with laughter.  A little later the Arab orphan, Emanuel, sang “Imagine” with such believeable passion and beauty that I, the judges and most of the audience drown in tears.

Luke 17:21 ” The kingdom of God is within you.”

I think it’s simply a matter of ‘having more time’ last year to sit back and enjoy the show.

I actually hated Kyle Sandilands (last year’s judge, not this year) with a passion.  When he gave his casting vote to knock out a singer I supported, my Facebook was filled with vitrol against him for at least a week afterwards haha.

At least the singer concerned will be releasing an album soon, something which his ex-wife never did.
